Starting with no programming experience, Sibel Hassan pursued Software Engineering at University and fell in love with software development. Joining Sparta Global’s Java Test Automation programme in 2024, she gained essential skills and confidence through intensive training and the inspiring Athena Academy. Now a Test Engineer in the public sector, Sibel leads a migration project, tackling everything from API testing to automation. Named Spartan of the Month for December, we asked Sibel about her experience in tech so far…
Having always had a passion for tech I decided to study Software engineering at Buckinghamshire New university. I went into it with no programming experience but quickly fell in love with the logical and analytical side of software development and testing.
When the opportunity arose to join Sparta Global in February 2024 for Java Test Automation training, I thought it would be the perfect way to improve my knowledge and kick-start a career I knew would challenge me but also be extremely rewarding.
The Athena academy immediately made me want to join, having already studied Software Engineering and had placements within tech companies, I saw firsthand how few women there were in this industry and I was really excited to develop with other women starting their tech careers and work alongside them.
The training was an intense nine-week programme but the trainers were so supportive and helpful in preparing us for the role, focusing on teaching us about the tools and frameworks we would need to secure placements and transition smoothly.
One of the biggest aspects I am grateful to Sparta for are the connections I have made, my cohort members – whom I was lucky enough to be placed alongside - have been beyond inspiring. In addition, my client-side colleagues are powerhouses of knowledge and every day I learn from their greatness too.
I am currently working as a Test Engineer for the public sector. I am part of a large team that always has a very busy schedule, always starting with our daily stand-ups to communicate where we are, our progress, and what we will be tackling next. From joining seven months ago, I am now the lead tester for a migration project which I have been really enjoying and have constantly been learning and improving along the way.
My project allows me to experience all areas of testing, I get to test APIs before the frontend is developed, then manually test the frontend, before developing and updating automation tests to check the new work. I look forward to each new challenge and each new accomplishment.
I love working in the tech industry because it's a good challenge for me, it keeps me on my toes and constantly learning and the sense of accomplishment when something is completed is amazing! I can definitely see myself progressing with my tech career and continuing to better myself and my knowledge.
I was shocked but really happy to be named Spartan of the month, it's really lovely to be recognised and appreciated for your work, I know there are many amazing Spartans and it's really nice to be listed amongst them.
