Sarina Sidhu joined Sparta Global’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion department to complete a short internship alongside her University of Birmingham, International Business degree. Just one year into her studies, but with a clear passion for already developing for all things inclusion – Sarina talks about her internship experience.
A valuable experience
I am extremely thankful for the incredible opportunity I had to serve as an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I) intern at Sparta Global for two weeks. This valuable experience has expanded my horizons and equipped me with a diverse range of knowledge that will shape my journey throughout university and beyond. My time as an intern at Sparta Global has been nothing short of transformative. I've had the privilege of delving into the world of ED&I, an area of importance in today's world.
A place for development
The driving force behind embarking on this internship journey was a desire for professional development. The opportunity to gain real-world work experience within an office setting had become rare due to Covid-19. Therefore, when Sparta Global extended this opportunity to me, it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. My internship at Sparta Global has been an eye-opening experience, where I've been able to refine the way I carry myself and conduct my work within a corporate environment. Another powerful motivation that fuelled my interest in this internship was the prospect of learning in a hands-on environment. After studying business for numerous years, the opportunity to step out of the classroom and into a professional setting was both exciting and immensely valuable. This hands-on experience has added depth and authenticity to my academic foundation, providing insights and lessons that no classroom learning could replicate!
Learning about HTD
I was introduced to Sparta Global's innovative 'Hire, Train, deploy' (HTD) business model, and it was unlike anything I had ever encountered before. I sat there learning all the nuances to reveal the intricate workings that underpin the success and profitability of their business model. Shortly after my introduction to Sparta Global's business model, I was presented with an opportunity to refine my presentation skills alongside another intern. This experience has proven to be incredibly valuable, offering me a unique platform to enhance an essential skill set that will undoubtedly serve me well in the future. The ability to communicate effectively and engage an audience is one that I am now equipped with thanks to this opportunity. I am confident that the skills and knowledge I've gained will be really useful.
Social impact
Sparta Global's commitment to cultivating a diverse talent pool speaks volumes about its identity as a true social impact organisation. At the heart of this commitment lies a profound belief in the power of inclusivity, a belief that resonates through every element of the company's operations. One of the most striking aspects of Sparta Global's ethos is its dedication to hiring individuals from an extensive array of ethnicities, races, and educational backgrounds. This approach to recruitment not only enriches the firm but serves as a testament to its inclusive practices and its genuine commitment to fostering an environment where everyone is valued.
As a young person, working for a socially responsible business is extremely important. In society today, there is deep value placed on behaving in an ethical and moral manner, which has contributed to my personal ethics. Being given the opportunity to intern at a company that places such importance on equality, diversity and inclusion has enabled me to see how important and beneficial a diverse workforce is for businesses, not just from a profit perspective.
As I embark on my university career, I carry with me the insight gained from this remarkable experience. It has ignited a passion within me to champion diversity and inclusion in every certain aspect of my life. In conclusion, my internship at Sparta Global has been a profound experience. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to applying the knowledge and skills I've acquired to foster a more inclusive and equitable world, both during my university years and in the exciting journey that lies ahead.
