March Spartan of the Month: Sabrina Kaur

Almost 17% of Spartans are career changers or individuals pivoting from a non-tech degree – and Sabrina is one of them. Before deciding to pursue training in technology, Sabrina was working in a customer service role. After eight years she made the bold decision to change careers, first joining a software engineering bootcamp and then seeking to specialise and improve her employability with the Sparta Global Academy. Now working as a Business Analyst in the public sector, Sabrina has earned Spartan of the Month after eight months on assignment. Read her story.

Congratulations on being named our March Spartan of the Month!

I’m truly honoured to be named Spartan of the Month. Being recognised and appreciated in this way, especially after just eight months working for a client, means a lot to me. I’m incredibly grateful for this recognition - thank you!

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you ended up applying for Sparta Global?

I didn’t go to a university, but before joining Sparta Global I completed a Software Engineering bootcamp to explore whether the tech industry was a good fit for me. I wanted to assess my potential, especially since I had no prior experience in the field. For the past eight years, I had been working in customer service, so this was a big career shift!

That is a big career change! How did you find Sparta Global helped with that pivot?

Completing a software engineering bootcamp before Sparta Global helped me discover how much I enjoyed the learning process and wanted to pursue a career in tech. However, I also knew that I didn’t want to specifically work as a software engineer and that I would need additional training and support to successfully transition into a new career path.

I joined Sparta Global in April 2024 and its comprehensive training program was exactly what I needed! It allowed me to build upon the skills I had gained during the bootcamp while introducing me to new areas like data analysis, which I hadn’t everexplored before. The program also honed my interview skills, and this ultimately helped me secure a role with a client that I’m now thoroughly enjoying.

How do you think the training  helped prepare you for the workplace and your new role?

I completed an intensive 8-week training program where we had to cover a vast amount of material we had to cover in a short time. The goal of the training was to ensure we could be as prepared as possible to tackle challenges that might come our way. Throughout the training, the support I received was exceptional. Regular feedback, weekly assessments, and the ability to ask as many questions as I needed – all made a huge difference and helped me tremendously throughout the academy.

And did it help to learn with others in your cohort?

I have built some great connections through Sparta! I was lucky to have few of my cohort join me when we moved to client side too. This was in addition to lots of Spartans who had already converted to full time employees on-site being on hand to support me through my journey.

That’s amazing to hear! Can you tell us a bit about your first role in tech with a Sparta Global client?

My current position is as a Business Analyst in the public sector.

No two days are the same in this role, as I work on different local authorities, each at various stages of their migration journey. One day, I might be creating business rules to transform data, while the next I could be working on a de-duplication task, comparing local authorities’ datasets. This role is incredibly diverse, and every day feels like an opportunity to learn something new - it’s a constant chance to expand my skill set!

How have you found your first foray into tech overall?

This role has exceeded my expectations in every way. Each day brings new learning opportunities and I’m pleasantly surprised by the amount of support I receive. I’m encouraged to ask as many questions as necessary, and my work and efforts are consistently recognised, which makes me incredibly proud.

The more I dive into my work, the more I realize how much I enjoy working with data and solving problems.

So, the big question – is this career you want to explore long-term?

I’m passionate about this field and would love to pursue it long-term. I know it will never feel repetitive, and the challenges it presents will constantly push me out of my comfort zone, helping me to grow both professionally and personally.

Would you recommend Sparta to other graduates and if so – why?

Yes, absolutely! Sparta Global offers individuals like me the chance to start a new career in the tech industry, even without prior experience or a university degree. Switching career paths can be a daunting challenge, but Sparta Global has made this transition much easier by providing valuable training and preparing me to succeed in work.
